Two gorillas fascinated by a caterpillar

If you’re looking for a cute video to cheer you up, this short clip of two gorillas from the Calgary Zoo staring at a caterpillar that happened into their cage should do the trick. However, I think the appeal of this video on a deeper level is obvious - looking at the gorilla, we can easily identify with the emotions it appears to be feeling. Heck, I sure remember how amazed I was by little critters when I was young. This video, to me, speaks of how little we understand about animal cognition and how many exciting discoveries may still remain.

You’re alive. That means you have infinite potential. You can do anything, make anything, dream anything. If you change the world, the world will change.

Which is the biggest number?

a) Grains of sand in the entire world

b) Stars in the universe

c) Water molecules in 10 drops of water

Maybe you won’t believe me, but the answer is C. A rough estimate of the number of grains of sand on the Earth is 7.5 x 1018 grains. Using data from the Hubble telescope, it can likewise be estimated that there are about x 1022 stars in the universe, or about 1,000 stars for every grain of sand. But incredibly, you only need about 10 drops of water - not even 10 grams - to dwarf the size of the other two numbers.

Moral of the story: molecules are really, really, reallllllly small.
